Student Clubs and Organizations

Student Clubs and Organizations provide a rich and exciting multi-cultural dimension to college life at Mesa. Following is the 2008/2009 listing of clubs on campus, along with the names of their faculty advisor(s). Faculty advisors serve on a voluntary basis and are appointed by the College President on a yearly basis (i.e., September-June). The clubs and advisors listed below may change for 2009-2010.

Bahai Club - Promotes the ideals of the Bahai faith and increases the awareness of people about the necessity of unity of mankind by promoting the elimination of all prejudices, as well as promoting the principle of equal rights, opportunities and privileges for men and women. The club also advocates for the protection of the environment.
Advisor: Professor Bruce Naschak, English Department

Black Student Union - Encourages and create a supports a more positive awareness of the Black History, Unity, and Racial Harmony by presenting activities and current events to assist the Black Student in achieving personal and academic goals.
Advisors: Professor Thekima Mayasa, Black Studies Department

Enviro Club - The purpose of the members of The Enviro Club shall be promoting ideas and actions that benefit the natural environment as well as promoting the education of all aspects of environmental topics to him or herself and those around him/herself.
Advisors: Professor Claude Mona, Physical Sciences Department

EOPS/Care Club - Encourage EOPS/CARE students to further their education. Co-operate with local organizations that are striving for this same purpose and to they informed about events of all kinds and at all levels that affect the EOPS program. Aid EOPS/CARE students in networking for resources, information, and support.

Fashion Club - The purpose of the organization is to provide education and extracurricular activities in the area of fashion that complement and extend beyond what can be covered in the classroom.
Advisors: Professors Susan Lazear and Andrea Marx, Fashion Design Program

Fencing Club - Purpose to seek the improvement and repair of Mesa college's fencing equipment and crate a training program for the creation of professional fencers, with the foremost goal of bringing trophies back to Mesa College.
Advisor: Professor Paul Sykes, Biology Department

Honors Club - Seeks to create a community of motivated Mesa College Students seeking to utilize the benefits of networking, augmenting personal resumes. Most importantly to significantly increase member's preparedness and chance of admission to any university.

Inter Club Council (I.C.C.) - To support the functions of the active clubs. Inform the A.S.G. matters which arise or direct or indirect action that may affect the functions of I.C.C. To establish and maintain communication among all active clubs on campus and to actively promote the creation of new clubs. To provide guidance and resources for perspective clubs and assist active clubs.

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship - Purpose of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA is to establish and advance at colleges and universities witnessing communities of students and faculty who follow Jesus as Savior and Lord: growing in love for God, God's Word, God's people of every ethnicity and culture and God's purposes in the world.
Advisor: Professor Terry Kohlenberg, Speech Department

Jewish Student Union - The purpose of this organization shall be to strengthen Jewish identity through social, cultural, educational, and community building activities and to enhances the develop of the Jewish student life at Mesa.
Advisor: Professor Jack Forman, Librarian

Mesa Adventure Club - The Adventure Club will enchance the quality of campus life by bringing people together with leisure activities. Advisor: Professor Jerry Schad, Physical Sciences Department

Mesa College Animal Health Technology Student Association (MCAHTSA) - To provide unity between the first and second year students and to foster this unity by cooperative activities, fundraisers, the holding of meetings, and the presentation of MCAHTSA sponsored events. To provide a platform for continuing education activities for students, graduates and RVTs, and to support and further the development of Animal Health Technology and the activities associated with it and to provide members of the association with information concerning the Animal Health Technology field. To provide students with information concerning new and proposed laws regarding RVTs and to provide a abase for making the Board of Examiners in Veterinary Medicine aware of the views of both AHT students and RVTs in regard to pending legislation and to influence the Board to pass laws beneficial to RVTS. Lastly to provide emotional and financial support to fellow AHT students through activities such as group buying and book loans.

Mesa College Ceramics Club - Provides awareness and support for the Ceramics Department Program to inspire students participating and interested in the pursuit of furthering our knowledge and enjoyment of the fine art of ceramics, an appreciation for the ceramic medium.
Advisor: Professor Nathan Betschart, Art Department

Mesa College Interior Design Club - The club combines the Student Chapter of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) and the Student Chapter of NKBA (National Kitchen & Bath Association) for the purposes of involving, educating, and informing the students of the benefits of the benefits of the two organizations through extra-curricular educational programs, community service, and networking.

Mesa Culture Club - Supports and enhances the educational experience of international students through cooperative activities, meetings, and presentation of club - sponsored events.
Advisor: Professor Leroy Johnson, Counseling/Veterans Department

Mesa Japan Club - The purpose of the club shall endeavor to inspire an interest in students to learn about the Japanese culture and to get involved in local Japanese cultural event in the San Diego area.
Advisor: Professor Miyoko Hamanka-Holden, Languages Department

Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano De Aztlan (M.E.Ch.A) - Purpose is to prove a better understanding of the Chicano/Mexican race as a whole to the students and community of San Diego, and provide support for the students as well.
Advisor: Professor Manuel velez, Chicano Studies

Multimedia Club - The purpose of the club is promotion and improvement of all club members' understanding, experience, and skill in the field of multimedia.
Advisor: Professor Alfonso Saballett, CBTE Department

Parent Participation Advisory Committee (PPAC) - Established to open lines of communication between parents and staff of the Child Development Center and to provide support for parents and children.

Philosophy Club - The purpose of this club is to spread open-mindedness and empathy.
Advisor: Professor Michael Kuttnauer

Phi Theta Kappa - An international honor society. Encourages and supports academic achievement and service. Members are required to have completed 12 semester units and a 3.5 cumulative grade point average.
Advisors: Professor Sondra Frisch, English Department, Professor Beate Bermann-Enn, Art Department, and Professor Dickson Phiri, Biology Department

PSI Beta - A national Psychology Honor Society. Encourages and supports academic achievement and service. Members are required to have completed 12 semester units and a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Puente - The purpose of the organization shall be to provide educationally underrepresented community college students exposure to four-year colleges and universities; to increase the number of educationally underrepresented community college students to transfer to four-year colleges and universities; to provide an opportunity for these students to share experiences, provide support and socialize with each other; to provide an opportunity to learn leadership skills through service to the Puente Club, the campus, and the community; and thereby provide an opportunity to grow and learn so that they may return as leaders and mentors of future generations. Robotic Programming Club - The mission of the Club is to inspire and motivate curiosity, critical thinking, and generosity of both mind and spirit at Mesa College campus and the community at large.

STAR Club - The purpose of the STAR club will be to provide opportunities for leadership and to help encourage student participation in extra-circular activities.

Studio Arts Club - The Purpose of this club is to promote art appreciation on the Mesa College campus and the community as a whole and to provide a supportive social and work environment for students interested in making art.

The Fellowship of Associated Gay Students & Straight Allies - Promote a positive and progressive environment for people of all sexual orientations on the Mesa College campus and in the community as a whole, joined together in education, advocacy, outreach, and fellowship. Our focus is to promote LGBTQIA equality and safer sex; to empower our community; and to provide a social environment, which encourages personal growth for these students; and to act in a combined approach of student, faculty, and staff to accomplish these goals.

Women's Union - The purpose of this organization shall be to educate community college students about the accomplishments of women. To integrate community college students into the current women's rights movement, to offer women opportunities to learn leadership skills through service to women's organizations on campus, and in the community and to provide a network for women and men to share life experiences and socialize.
